  • The Allen Lee Hughes Fellowship Program was established to increase participation of people of color in professional theater. One of the first theater-run apprenticeships in the country dedicated exclusively to providing the highest standard of training to minorities, it is an attempt to break the cycle of exclusion and disengagement that has created a sever shortage of trained minority arts administrators, artisans and technicians. Fellowships require a 40-44 week commitment and are available to work with seasoned professionals in the areas of artistic and technical production, arts administration and Community Engagement. Arena Stage will provide a modest stipend and may assist in locating housing, but housing and transportation are ultimately the responsibility of the fellow.   • The Shakespeare Theatre Company offers a variety of administration and production internships for undergraduates, graduate students and young professionals with an interest in professional theatre. Interns are encouraged to complete an entire season's residency with the Company, which operates year-round (July-June). Schedules are rigorous; production interns work 40-60 hours per week, administration interns work 40 hours plus special events as needed. Part-time and for-credit internships are available. Applicants must show a strong interest in furthering their professional development and a commitment to working in a regional theatre. Stipends are available; most internships include housing.

John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts [Washington, DC]

  • Internships offer meaningful learning opportunities and on-the-job experiences to college juniors/seniors, graduate students, and recent college graduates (within two years of graduation) who are interested in beginning careers in performing arts management and/or arts education. Approximately 20 students are selected each semester to participate in a three to four month long, full-time internship (Fall, Sept-Dec; Winter/Spring, Jan-May; Summer, June-Aug). Internships may be available in advertising, development, education (local and national programs), National Symphony Orchestra, press relations, production, programming, technology, volunteer management, and finance. Interns receive a stipend of $225 per week to help defray housing and transportation costs. College credit may be available. Interns may attend performances, workshops, and classes presented by the Center, free of charge (space available), during their internship.
