- Opportunity: Call for entries, June 2 - July 31, 2008. Oapen to all visual arts media.
- Information: The National Portrait Gallery invites artists to invesitgate the contemporary art of the portrait for the second OUtwin Boochever Portarait Compertition, to be held in 2009. The comppetition aand resulting exhibition will celebrate excelence and innovation, with a strong focus on the variety of portrait mediums used by artists today. The National Portrait Gallery welcomes single figures, groups, or self-portraits from classical drawing and painting or hyperrealistic sculpture to large-scale photography to prints and new media.
Both emerging and professional artists are invited to paarticipate. Each artist may enter one work depicting aanyone; a friend, stranger, relative, a self-portrait - but it must be the result of the artist's direct encounter with that person. While the human form must be the focus of the work, artists are invited to interpret the concept of portraiture broadly; for example, an entry might not include a face.
The winner of the competition will receive a $25,000 cash award, as well as a seperate commission to portray a remarkable living American for the Portrait Gallery's collection. The winning artist and the Portrait Gallery will collaborate to select the subject for the commissioned portrait. Second prize is $7,500 and third prize will receive $5,000. Up to four additional artists may be commended for their work, and they will receive $1,000 each. All finalists'' works will form a major exhibition on view at the National Portrait Gallery from October 23, 2009, until August 22, 2010.

Entry to the competition and submission of JPEG imaages is available online for a nonrefundable registration fee of $35. Artists who wish to submit time-based media (video, film, animation) will find instructions for entry on the website.

- Opportunity: help redesign Richmond Coliseum concession areas
- Information: Rob Coyle, director of food and beverage at the Richmond Coliseum is looking for a few motivated artists and designers to give the 30 plus years old coliseum a face-lift. The project would include helping to redesign the concession areas, as well as create new themes and signage. Do to slow business during the summer months, the project will be starting soon.

- Opportunity: call for entries
- Information: West Virginia University seeks sculptors to create outdoor art benches to be placed around the exterior in front of the College of Creative Arts. This project addresses the need for public art to be incorporated into public spaces and community facilities. This project will serve to educate citizens regarding the importance of art in public spaces and to make our pedestrian plaza more attractive. The budget is $24,000, including installation and delivery. The proposed designs should be constructed of durable materials, compatible with weather extremes and freeze thaw cycle, be easy to maintain and have safe and comfortable surfaces. The bench should seat 3-6 people with some back rests and/or multiple parts, be securely installed and guaranteed construction for at least 5 years. This project is open to all artists 18 and older who are U.S. residents. Applicants may submit up to two proposals or up to three similar works already completed including prices.
- Requirements: Artists should submit up to ten images of previous related art work in the proposed media, resume (limit 2 pages), 1 page artist statement, detailed drawings with inclusion of scale, front, back and side views and include maintenance requirements. The application deadline is May 1st

- Opportunity: Short Film Contest
- Information: To compete, make a short film of a Random Act of Cheetos (RAoC). It can be a skit, a prank, or one of you showing us your last report card. You know, something that will make us laugh. Just make sure it’s all Cheetos inspired.
Four finalists will be selected by a panel of judges. The Top 4 finalists win $500 each and 16 Honorable Mentions win $100 cash each. All winners get a year’s supply of Cheetos!
Then the voting public will decide who will be the grand prize-winner. The grand prize winning RAoC will be featured on Comedy Central Late Night! The winner will also get $5,000 and a brand new HD camcorder.

- Opportunity: Web Design Internship
- Information: ACT LLC is looking for a creative, organized, and energetic individual to join its web team as a Web Intern. Web experience is preferred, but training on organizational systems will be provided.
This is an outstanding learning opportunity for a person looking to start a career in the communications or web development field.
This is a part-time internship with a 10-15 hour work week, Monday-Friday between 9-5. The position begins in June 2008 and will last 3 months with the possibility of extension. This is not a paid position.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Assist in the design, creation, and maintenance of webpages using Content Management Systems, HTML editors, and databases
• Help organize and provide documentation of web content and multimedia
• Perform administrative tasks for RFF websites (e.g., respond to user inquiries, fix formatting and text errors, fulfill special requests from staff or public)

- Opportunity: Call for entries
- Information: As part of an ongoing commitment to promote challenging and innovative practices in the visual arts, UICA is seeking artists (18 and older residing in the US) to submit entries to “UP”, a National Juried Exhibition of sculpture. The works in this exhibition can be suspended, hung, rolled, pushed, inflated, folded, or moved off the floor to meet the demands of a changing space. Accepted works will be exhibited from September to November in the UICA’s Monroe Ave Gallery. This exhibition will be highlighted during the 2008 International Sculpture Conference being held in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

- Opportunity: Greeting card artwork job.
- Information: Jenny Lovin's is in need of an artist who can help develop a character for her greeting cards.
In the cards there will be a main character "Marj" that is faced with an organizing situation on the outside of the card (subject not to heavy) and then comes through it with a little humor on the inside of the card.
For example, the first card (flagship card) will be the character "Marj" sitting down, looking downtrodden surrounded with clutter with the tagline "Clutter is like your lap" and then you open the card and she's standing up and the area is all organized, and "Marj" looks all put together (like the weight of the world was taken off her shoulders) and the tagline reads, "It disappears when you stand up and take action. RE OLDS" There will be 4 cards that have to do with clutter. Clutter and your --- mind, lifestyle, finances and time.
Jenny would like to start with the creation and launch of the character as soon as possible, so please send her some samples of your work. At this time, the fees SDI will pay for the creation, re-works, proofs and electronic deliverables of the 1st character/card is $250.00.
When the scope/description of work is agreed upon, you will be asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement before the work begins. These cards, artwork and the statement will be copyrighted through Stedman Dynamics Incorporated, in Savannah, GA.

- Opportunity: Freelance, part-time, web design job
- Information: Sharon Rapoport of "The Farm" is looking for a web designer to help develop websites for for a variety of different clients. This position would begin either as freelance or part-time and would hopefully work into a full-time position. Working in Flash is required, along with some knowledge of current trends in SEO. Interest and/or experience in film/video a plus. Competitive applicants will pay great attention to thoughtful usage of type and overall design versatility.
Sharon is looking for an independent candidate who knows how to make good use of their time. Most of her hirees work with her virtually, meeting only occasionally in person. Energy and passion are qualities she looks for, in addition to great work, of course! In the past she's used mostly talent out of New York and Atlanta, but would love to have someone in Virginia who could meet with her in Roanoke occasionally.
She needs someone very soon, but would be willing to wait for the right candidate.
