Venuszine.com seeks concert reviews intern to work from home

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

  • Venuszine.com — the Web component of internationally distributed women's music and culture magazine Venus Zine — seeks a fall semester intern to work directly with venuszine.com's concert reviews editor, Laura Leebove. Candidates will work from home and must commit to at least three months. Though this is an unpaid position, it is an excellent opportunity to work with a Venus Zine editor who's always in search of up-and-coming musicians. It's also a great way to gain hands-on experience in music writing and editing and a chance to get some great writing clips. Other perks include concert guest-list privileges, writing opportunities, and occasional free music. We seek a candidate with a passion for attending concerts and writing about music as well as one who is an excellent copy editor. Strong communication and organization skills are extremely important in addition to the ability to work on deadline.
  • START DATE: flexible but somewhere around late August/early September. THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL: • live in a city with access to national touring musicians. Candidates from smaller towns will be considered but would have fewer opportunities to write concert reviews. • be an avid concert-goer. Do your friends turn to you to find out what shows are coming up in your area? Do you keep up with music blogs and pay attention to what's going on with up-and-coming musicians? • be an effective communicator. The intern will be regularly in touch with writers, photographers, and publicists, and must have a professional but friendly attitude. • have reliable access to the Internet. Since this is a work-from-home position, most communication with the concert reviews editor will be done via e-mail, so it's important that you don't drop off the face of the Earth for a few days at a time. • have strong writing and editing skills and pay close attention to detail. The intern will have the opportunity to review shows and will likely be required to attend and review two concerts per month (might vary depending on the city). This could lead to writing opportunities for other sections of the Web site or possibly the print magazine. S/he will also be copy editing and fact-checking, so details are important. • work well on deadline. Show reviews need to be turned around within 24-48 hours of the end of the concert and reviews need to be fact-checked and posted in a timely manner. • be computer and Internet savvy. The intern will be posting several reviews on venuszine.com every week. It also will help to have basic Photoshop skills, as there might be some light photo editing or resizing. INTERNSHIP DUTIES • working approximately five to 10 hours per week (this is not exact because work will be very spread out throughout the week). • copy editing and fact-checking concert reviews, writing headlines. • posting concert reviews on venuszine.com. • tracking down publicity contacts for musicians. • writing two concert reviews per month (may vary depending on the city). • researching and listening to music of bands beings considered for review. • collaborating with the concert reviews editor to brainstorm ideas and help decide which shows should be covered on the site. • e-mailing publicists, writers, and photographers to help coordinate concert reviews. • possibly some occasional light photo editing or resizing.
  • HOW TO APPLY Please e-mail your résumé, cover letter, and three samples of your music writing to Venus Zine concert reviews editor Laura Leebove at laura@venuszine.com by Sunday, July 27. Also include three to five magazines or music blogs/Web sites you read regularly, along with five touring bands/musicians you'd like to see.

Venuszine.com seeks concert writers and photographers

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

  • Venuszine.com — the Web component of the internationally circulated magazine that focuses on women in music, film, fashion, art, and DIY culture — seeks concert writers and photographers for assignments in major cities around the country. This is an unpaid, freelance position for indie-rock enthusiasts who have experience or are up to the challenge of penning a piece or snapping some shots at venues with a quick turnaround.
  • Applications will be accepted for any major city with access to national touring artists, but we are especially looking for contributors in the following cities: Writers in Albany, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Philly, Portland, Seattle, Washington D.C. Photographers in Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington D.C. The ideal candidate has already started thinking about their summer/fall show schedule and is responsible enough to regularly communicate and work with an editor, primarily via e-mail. Writers and photographers (sorry, only photographers who shoot digital will be considered) will have 24-48 hours from the end of the show to submit their story or photos. The editor will provide edits and feedback within one day, and the final version of the story will need to be back to the editor within another day to be posted on our site. PERKS • free admittance to concerts • published writing experience for an internationally respected publication • exposure (venuszine.com is read by approximately 150,000+ unique visitors per month) • promotion of your work (your venuszine.com profile will have you listed as a contributor, and your review could be featured in our weekly newsletter)
  • Please e-mail a cover letter, résumé and 3-5 samples of your music writing/criticism (preferably published) to concert reviews editor Laura Leebove at laura@venuszine.com. If you are a photographer, please include 5 low-res images and links to your work/portfolio in your application. In your cover letter, please specify 3-5 touring bands you want to see and three publications or blogs/Web sites you regularly read. Please, no calls or follow-up e-mails to check the status of your application.

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

  • LINC is planning its annual “It’s in the Bag” charity event where local artists decorate or design a handbag expressing their creative genius while showing support for those battling cancer. You are invited to participate as a handbag designer and assist LINC in its mission.
  • All proceeds from the auction will benefit the Legal Information Network for Cancer’s program and services. LINC connects people with resources that ease the day-to-day challenges of cancer. Services include helping patients secure disability benefits, locate community resources, forestall debt collection and plan for the future by drafting wills, powers of attorney, etc. Event Description: Handbag Silent & Live Auction; Purses designed by local artists Date: Evening of October 16, 2008 Event Location: Troutman Sanders Bldg. on Haxall Point, Richmond
  • Handbags Completed: September 10, 2008 (Please submit sooner if completed as there is a lot of processing to do for each bag!) There are two drop off points for you when you are finished: LINC office (400-B Southlake Blvd, Attention Donna Sutton) and the Virginia Museum (attention Marcia Collier) Design Parameters: Each handbag should be named by the Designer. Some handbags will be totally created by the artist, while others will start with a pre-made form (small frame with evening fabric also available at the LINC Office and the Virginia Museum). Contact Penny Ohman* if you would like one ordered for you. Tax Receipt: Tax receipts will be issued for your work. Please declare a value and put it on the artist form you turn in with the bag. Publicity: The event will be advertised in local media, flyers posted at area businesses, clubs, stores, etc. The artist’s business information, if requested – and we encourage this, will be included in the event program. Thank you for your interest in supporting LINC. We hope you will join us in this exciting event to help area cancer patients with the “every day matters” of cancer.
