Juried Exhibitions Series Overview

Now through September 26, 2008 the Public Arts Office of Chapel Hill is accepting submissions from artists who wish to display original two- and three-dimensional work in Chapel Hill Town Hall and the Chapel Hill Public Library during 2008 and 2009. This exhibition is open to all artists. North Carolina artist are encouraged to apply. There is no application fee.

Selected artists will be invited to exhibit their work in small group shows of two or three artists at either the Chapel Hill Public Library or Chapel Hill Town Hall for a two-month period in 2008 or 2009. The Juried Exhibitions Series is promoted in the local media and through Arts Commission announcements. Selected artists will be asked to provide specific information and deliver their work for installation at agreed upon times. Public Arts staff and contractors install the work for exhibition. Opening receptions are usually held Friday evenings or Saturday afternoons.

The Town of Chapel Hill will insure works against theft or damage while on display. All artworks are subject to final acceptance by the Public Arts Office at the time of installation. Artworks may be for sale. If the artwork is for sale, the Public Arts Office requires a donation of 15% on any work sold to help defray the cost of this public arts program. At the exhibition’s end artists are responsible for picking up their work at an agreed upon time or arranging for return shipping.

How to Apply

Artists and teams may send a compact disc containing portfolio materials through the post to the Town of Chapel Hill’s Public Arts Office (address provided below) or in a .zip file sent to chapelhillarts@gmail.com. No hardcopy portfolios will be considered or returned.

Each portfolio must include:

Ten (10) Images of Relevant Work
Each image must be a PC-compatible JPEG file at 72 pixels per inch, as close to but no larger than the following dimensions: 750 pixels wide by 560 pixels tall. Each JPEG file must be named in the following format – lastname_01_title.jpg – where the artist’s last name is followed by underscore, two-digit identification number, underscore, title, file extension. If you wish to show a detail, include it within the required number of images. Please do not present your work as a montage of images (ie., in a PowerPoint file); each image must be a separate JPEG. Images submitted should be representative of the type of work proposed for exhibition.

Annotated Image List
A word file (.doc) listing JPEG images by two-digit identification number, followed by artist, title of work depicted, media, and dimensions (width by length in inches).

Resume
A word file (.doc) providing resume, no longer than two pages.

Selection Process

An Artist Selection Committee comprised of representatives of the Chapel Hill Public Library, Chapel Hill Town Hall, the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission, the Town’s Public Arts Office, and local artists will review all complete portfolios and select artists to participate in the 2008 – 2009 Juried Exhibitions Series. Selections are based on artistic excellence and the goal of exhibiting a variety of media. Public Arts staff will notify artists of the Selection Committee results and will make exhibition arrangements with selected artists.

Chapel Hill Public Library Information

Artworks displayed as part of the Juried Exhibitions Series are hung in the main entry and lower level public areas of the Chapel Hill Public Library. The Library serves an average of 1,000 people per day and is open seven days a week. The Chapel Hill Public Library is located at 100 Library Drive, Chapel Hill, NC 27516

Chapel Hill Town Hall Information

Chapel Hill Town Hall has two floors of wall space and three glass cases for the display of artwork selected for the Juried Exhibitions Series. Approximately 24,000 people visit Town Hall annually. Chapel Hill Town Hall is open Mondays through Fridays and is located at 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission Information

Established in 1992 by a resolution of the Town Council, the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission is the Town advisory board responsible for advising the Council on art-related matters, promoting public awareness of the arts, and working with Town Public Arts staff to provide advice on the Percent For Art program and to increase public access to the arts through programming initiatives.

The South Russia State University of Economics and Service (Shakhty, Rostov region, the Russian Federation) addresses to you with a proposal of cooperation. The design school of our educational institution is greatly interested in professional contacts.
The South Russia State University of Economics and Service together with the Fund “Forum of Culture and Art of Uzbekistan” will hold the X th Anniversary Annual International Contest of Young Designers and Stylists “Podium-2008” on the 19 th -27 th of October 2008 in the Centre of National Art of Tashkent city (Republic of Uzbekistan). The contest is organized under the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and Union of Designers of Russia.
The goal of the contest is to develop creative potential of students’ youth, to create professional environment of designers and area of international cooperation of the world fashion industry. The contest establishes and extends creative ties between scientific and manufacturing potential of the world business community in the field of fashion. Participants have an opportunity to demonstrate their talent of artist and professional skills to the famous specialists in the sphere of fashion, experienced professors, potential employers and journalists.

The International Contest of Young Designers and Stylists “Podium” is traditionally a significant event in the environment of stylists, designers, specialists in the field of fashion in which 150-200 students from 25-30 higher educational institutions of Russia, European and Asian countries take part annually. The experience of participation in the previous contests showed a great interest in collections from the representatives of fashion industry. The participators of the contest and guests have an opportunity to meet the leading specialists of textile, shoemaking and clothing industries, to share experience and new ideas.
The program of the contest includes the seminar “National Traditions and Innovations of Modern Fashion Industry”, press-conferences for Mass Media and also excursions around Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara. The catalogue with photos of new collections and also prizewinners of the previous years will be published before the beginning of the contest. The main prize of the contest is 2 100 EUR.
Holding of the X th Anniversary International Contest of Young Designers and Stylists “Podium-2008” in the ancient land of Republic of Uzbekistan that has deep historical and cultural traditions is intended for the renaissance of national arts, strengthening of friendly relations and development of cooperation between educational institutions.

Requirements

We invite your creative groups, young authors making collections of clothes and footwear and also professors of chairs, directors of educational institutions to take part in this activity which will become an outstanding event in the cultural life of Russia and Uzbekistan.

REQUIREMENTS TO THE WORKS FOR THE CONTEST

• Number of models of clothes in collection – not more than 5.
• Number of authors of one collection – not more than 2.
• Participants should have sound track on CD for accompaniment of the demonstration of contest’ models.
• Models of clothes are demonstrated on models of organizational committee.
Participant presents collections of suit (clothes, footwear, accessories) for demonstration at the podium. According to the results of the preview of the contest show the international jury chooses the best collections for participation in Gala-show and determines creative works of winners on nominations:

1. Prêt-à-Portè – collection of style suits for real consumers.
2. Avant-garde – collection of conceptual suits for brave experimenters.
3. Footwear and accessories - as compositional centre of suits of contest collection.
4. Folk – collection of suits with national matter.
5. Denim – collection of clothes with jeans materials.
6. Debut – collections of suits created by students of secondary special educational establishments and first-year students of institutions.

Criteria of Appraisal of Jury of the Contest

• artistic expressiveness and novelty of idea;
• level of professional skills;
• commercial prospects.
Final maximum appraisal (rating) of models is 10 marks.

Conditions of Participation in the Contest

The students of higher and secondary professional educational establishments, independent authors, young designers and stylists not older than 35 may take part in the contest.
For participation in the Xth International Contest of Young Designers and Stylists “Podium-2008” it is necessary:
1. by 05.09.2008 to send filled application form via regular or e-mail, including questionnaire (attached file) and electron version of graphic image of collection (photos are available).

The application forms without electron variant of graphic image of collection cannot be regarded. The organization committee undertakes obligations not to use these works in commercial and other purposes except for appraisal of the participation of the author in the contest “Podium-2008”.
All electronic variants of sketches or photos of collections sent by 05.09.2008 will be published in the catalogue of the anniversary contest.
2. by 05.09.08 to choose preferable variant of accommodation and payment for participation.
3. by 10.09.08 to pay cashless for the participation in the contest.
4. 20.-26.10.08 to present works at the contest.

Every participant should have national and foreign passports with the date of expiry not earlier than February 2009.
The main prizes for foreign participants of the contest are awarded in Tashkent City. Foreign prizewinners should have a xerocopy of national and foreign passport.

Call for Artists for the National Capital Art Glass Guild Exhibit at Annmarie Garden

When it turns cold outside, the colorful and spectacular glass creations of Celebrations! will warm the spirit and put every visitor in the mood for the holidays. A variety of hands-on activities, music, and programs will complement the exhibit. An Ornament Show & Sale will coincide with Celebrations! offering opportunities for browsing and shopping, and beginning in mid-December, Annmarie Garden’s annual event Garden In Lights will add to the holiday festivities. Celebrations! is an excellent opportunity for glass artists to join the Guild and exhibit their newest designs.

The Guild is comprised of over one hundred artists who work in every aspect of glass. From massive stained-glass installations to bathroom sinks and mouth blown vessels, their creativity knows no bounds. Each artist is unique in their approach to glass so a showing of this group’s work is diverse, sometimes surprising, but always exciting. You never know what you will see.

The guild was established thirty years ago as the stained glass guild, but some years later the name was changed to art glass guild to include the various disciplines and materials the members were using. Members are primarily from Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia, although a number of members live outside the tri-state area. Membership is open to anyone interested in glass.

The Exhibit will be held at Annmarie Garden Sculpture Park & Arts Center, a thirty-acre park that includes a beautiful new Arts Building, walking trails, and a Studio School. The thirty acre park is open daily, 9am – 5pm. The new Arts Building and the Gift Shop are open Tuesday-Sunday, 10am – 5pm; admission to the building is free for members, $3 for adults, $2 for seniors, and $2 for children; children under five are free. A terrific Toddler Zone located in the Arts Building is the perfect place to distract a fidgety toddler, or take the kids for a walk with one of the free scavenger hunts in hand. Annmarie Garden is conveniently located just off Route 2-4 on Dowell Road in Solomons, Maryland.

The Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce would like to announce the addition of a new Art Show as part of their 7th Annual Que Pasa Festival on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond, VA. The festival will open at Noon and end at 8:00PM. A diverse crowd of 5,000+ is expected. The festival is a celebration of the North American, Caribbean, Central American and South American cultures through music, art, food and sport (soccer).

A limited number of spaces are available to Hispanic artists to display and sell their work inside the Science Museum of Virginia. Artists will need to provide their own tables, easels, etc. for display and staff their display for the entire festival (no early departures before 8:00PM). While there is no artist vendor fee to participate in this show, the Chamber is asking for 15% of gross sales payable at the end of the festival.
