Call for Artists

Opportunity

Donate work for Donations for Creations event.

Information

Donations for Creations is an event organized by a group of students in VCU’s Graphic Design department. The project is inspired by the socially conscious design attitudes and practices taught by Noah Scalin in his course Design Rebels.

Help us help Richmond! We need donated artwork, any medium and size accepted. These works will be traded at our event for food, clothes, and goods to go to the Daily Planet homeless shelter. Everyone benefits—artists and art students can get their work out to a wider audience, the public has a chance to collect art affordably, and the Daily Planet gets the supplies they desperately need this time of year.

Drop-off dates for art will be Friday November 14th, Saturday the 15th, and Sunday the 16th, from 2:00pm-8:00pm at 1005 Grove Ave. To arrange another time or for pick-up, please email us at donatecreate@gmail.com.

Collaboration on Documentary

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Opportunity

A student-produced documentary project funded through a 2007 Undergraduate Research Grant, is seeking several student interns for 2008-2009.

Information

As a recent VCU graduate and media production professional, I am seeking students who are interested on collaborating with my documentary partner, Jon Headlee, and I on a production that is focusing on counterculture in Richmond, VA.

We are looking for several talented and motivated students who are interested in assisting in the roles that follow. We will be flexible with what part of the project students would like to work on and what length of time they’d like to be involved. We believe that we can pass on the knowledge of counterculture and tolerance that we’ve learned to the students we work with as well as our audience. As students, we both treated this project as a job, and believe that treating it as such has led to an invaluable educational experience.

We can offer students a chance to get their work out to the public and have credit for their résumés, portfolios, and reels. Though we cannot offer financial compensation because of our limited budget, we can offer training on all of our equipment, including a Cannon XH-A1 HD camera. These positions are an excellent opportunity for any student interested in socially productive documentary or who simply wishes to gain experience on a project that is not too big to offer the hands-on advantage. Experience is not required for every position, but as always, it is helpful. If there is not a position listed that you would like to have, make one up! We are open to experimentation.
The roles that we are seeking to fill:

-Assistant Camera/ Sound Operator: Will be trained on the Canon XH-A1 with the goal of aiding the current camera operators in capturing pre-set interviews, on-the-spot interviews, and b-roll/observer footage. Will also switch off and work as boom mic control. Primary on-location times will be weekends and nights due to the nature of the project. Start Date: Immediate.

-Production Assistants: Will spend time on set at a variety of locations, aiding with interviews. Production assistants should be flexible and willing to help the filmmakers in a variety of ways including: talking to interview subjects on location and shoot set up and break down. Primary on-location times will be weekends and nights due to the nature of the project. Should be a good communicator and dependable. Start Date: Immediate.

-Graphic Designer: Will be responsible for designing graphics and filers, and aid in branding. We are open to experimental techniques and guerilla marketing tactics. Samples of work are required as well as an interview to discuss our vision for the visual aesthetic of this film. Start date: Immediate

-Motion Graphics Artist: Will be responsible for designing menus, and as well as motion graphics which will be a part of the scripted documentary footage. Samples of work are required as well as an interview to discuss our vision for the visual aesthetic of this film. Start date: February 2009

-Web designer: Will be responsible for the creation of the Identity: Richmond website. This site will have video files, but will not have large amounts of content. It will mainly serve as an online graphic and video presence for the documentary. We will work with your skill level. Start date: Immediate

-Production Coordinator: Will be responsible for researching and arranging shoots. The Production Coordinator will be responsible for obtaining permission to film, location releases, and organizing shoot times as well as updating an online calendar accessible to every member of the Identity: Richmond crew. Must be responsible and able to work well with others. Start date: Immediate

-Research Assistant: Will spend time aiding the producer-directors in their exploration of counter-culture. Duties can/may include library research, historical research, and searching for data on the Internet. Will also conduct research on production and post-production grants and opportunities that may eventually help to support the project. Start date: Immediate

-Position Yet to be Defined: What do you do? If you have a skill that you think could relate to this project, we want to hear about it and learn how we can work with you.

2008 Insomnia Film Festival

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Opportunity

Register team to compete in Apple’s film contest.

Information

On November 15 at 9:00 a.m. EST, the clock starts ticking.

Apple will post the list of required elements for entries in the 2008 Insomnia Film Festival. Then you and your team will have the next 24 hours to make and upload your 3-minute movie. That’s the easy part.

Once your movie’s up, you’ll need to get everyone you know—and then some—to watch and rate it online. If your movie makes the top 25, you can host a showing at the Apple Retail Store. Your adoring fans can download it from the iTunes Store. And it’ll be screened by some big-time industry players: John August, Doug Ellin, Jody Hill, Masi Oka, Jason Bateman, Paul Haggis, Greg Mottola, Barry Sonnenfeld.

Earn the #1 rating from either the public or the pros, and you’ll land one of two grand prizes. Everyone on your team will get a MacBook Pro, Final Cut Studio 2, Logic Studio, Shake, and a year’s worth of One to One personal training to help you use them. Not a bad trade for one night’s sleep.
