All internships are full-time (3 or 4 days per week) and unpaid.
These opportunities are all for SUMMER 09 (mid-May/early June - mid-August)
1. Internship Opportunity in the Business Licensing Department
Interested in learning how your design skills can create revenue to sustain a non-profit institution ?
The Business Development department is responsible for retail development , licensing, publications, and traveling collection exhibitions for the museum. This encompasses everything from new product development for the Guggenheim store and Web Store to licensing intellectual property for the museum to preliminary planning for traveling exhibitions. This summer the Business Licensing intern will, amongst other projects, assist in populating the web store. This will include going to photo shoots, helping to photoshop the images after the shoot, create new icons, gather product pricing and description and liaise with our editorial team and the buyers then upload all of this into the website according to set guidelines. The intern may also support traveling collection exhibitions, making scale models of galleries and artwork, and working on exhibition layouts in CAD.
The Business Licensing department seeks a senior undergraduate or graduate student with web design skills and general graphic or exhibition design skills. Candidates should possess fluency in the Adobe Creative Suite, MS Office, Photoshop and Lightroom. Some CAD experience a plus . Proficiency in English is a must (foreign language isn’t relevant in this case) .
2. Internship Opportunity in Human Resources
Interested in professional experience at a world-renowned modern and contemporary art institution? Apply for an internship in the dynamic Human Resources department at the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum.
This will be an interesting, fast-paced HR internship opportunity for undergraduate or grad student with a declared major/minor in HR-related studies. Responsibilities will include researching niche employment websites and posting ads per our template, screening resumes, performing employment reference checks, and organizing new hire employment packages. In addition, work will involve preparation for the 09 performance appraisal process at the museum and a salary survey project .
It is highly desirable for the intern to have a degree background in Human Resources or Institutional/Organisational Psychology for this internship, or equivalent work experience.
3. Internship Opportunities in the Curatorial Department (Abu Dhabi)
Interested in learning more about the Guggenheim’s global network?
Curators for the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Museum (currently under development) focus on collecting research for potential exhibitions and acquisitions programs. For interested candidates, an expertise in modern and contemporary art is essential and an interest in the Middle East is an advantage. We seek a summer candidate who can undertake both administrative aspects of daily department functions, and assist with research for upcoming exhibitions and publications, maintaining object databases and correspondence. Interns should be at least college seniors with a strong GPA, a record of high academic achievement, and excellent writing and research skills.
4. Internship Opportunities in the Retail department
Interested in learning more about our innovative retail strategies and client care at a non-profit museum?
The Retail department seeks an intern who is interested in learning more about the customer care elements of visitor experience at the museum. Interns will be involved with the Guggenheim’s Web Store project and will source, photograph and update merchandise for the website. The intern will also be involved with daily administration, customer care in the store, attend buyers meetings, track stock and take inventory. This is a busy internship for someone who has strong interest in customer care and experience within a retail environment.
5. Internship Opportunity in Facilities Management /Office Services
Interested in learning more about the importance of Facilities Management in the administration of a modern and contemporary non-profit museum? Apply for our internship in the Facilities/Office Services Department at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
The intern will participate in practical duties such as attending minutes, taking and typing notes. They will experience museum walkthrough and help with new-hire orientation help. The intern will help with cleaning vendor files and electronic invoice storage. They will learn about the administrative aspects of the museum. This internship would suit a highly-organised and motivated individual with the desire to learn about non-profit museum structure across many departments. Individuals need not have an arts or humanities background for this internship - transferable skills from other academic disciplines and professional experience will be considered.
6. Internship Opportunity in the Major Gifts - Development department
Interested in learning more about fundraising for a non-profit, and how a capital campaign works?
The summer intern in Major Gifts will work on a variety of projects such as assisting in preparations for Annual Fund solicitations, corresponding with major donors and prospects and maintaining donor prospects in the museum’s Raiser’s Edge database. The intern will gain an understanding of how donor relationships work within a museum institution and will assist with and attend small events for prospective donors. Additional projects include research, appeal analysis, preparation of gift acknowledgements and general administrative duties.
Strong research and analytical skills are required. An interest in prospect research, knowledge of databases and experience of event planning is desirable.

Requirements
Qualifications for all internships : BA or MA degree program in a relevant liberal arts, arts administration or art and business program. Interest in not-for-profit arts sector is desirable and excellent written and spoken English necessary. All interns participate in the excellent Museum Culture Seminar Program, visiting varied New York arts institutions and gaining the opportunity to make important contacts for a future career in the museum field.
