The competition sections include:

41° Opere Nuove – Festival for Italian short Films

This section is for films of Italian authors or Italian productions. If the language is different than Italian, subtitles in Italian are necessary. Also films of non-Italian authors are eligible if the language of the film is Italian.

6° No Words – International Festival of short films without words
This section is for films without dialog. Spoken words and written words are admitted only if they are irrelevant for the comprehension of the story.

5° ShortFilm Experiment
This section is for experimental films. Dialog and written words must be subtitled in English.

1° Die kurze Welle
This section is for films in German. Subtitles in English are admitted.

Requirements

All competitions are reserved for short films completed in the years 2008 and 2009, that have not been entered to the previous editions of the festival. The running time cannot exceed 30 minutes, titles inclusive.

For the next installment of the WPA’s Experimental Media Series, WPA will present a selection of innovative video and sound works over the course of two evenings at The Phillips Collection in Washington DC, and two additional screenings of selections from the Phillips event combined with student works at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

For the screening, WPA is calling all video and sound artists to submit works that explore any subject matter of their choice in innovative ways. A selection of the received video and sound works will be presented in the framework of a public screening. Artists selected for the screening nights will be notified during the last week of August. Additionally, two artists submitting the most compelling entries, as reviewed by the juror and based on overall quality and innovation will be awarded the Kraft Prize for New Media of $750 and the WPA Experimental Media Prize of $750 on October 1. Please note that the WPA Prize will go to an artist living and working in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Summer 2009 Internship with Students from Beijing Foreign Studies University

Information

The Office of International Education is currently seeking 2 mature, hardworking, and culturally sensitive interns to work during July 10–August 9^th. During that time VCU will host 35 students from Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) and Fudan University in Shanghai. The “American Studies Program” is a month-long program intended to offer these students insight into American culture and education. The students are attending daily lectures offered by VCU professors on a variety of topics such as American political science, history, mass communications, homeland security, literature, business and more. They are also attending day trips to the surrounding area including Monticello, Williamsburg and Bush Gardens. Two overnight trips are planned as well, which are: Washington, DC and New York. The interns will accompany the students on all these trips, as well as participate in daily on-campus activities with the students. Because this is a one month internship, it can be intense, so students are encouraged not to work during this time so that the internship can be their first priority. As compensation, students will receive free travel arrangements during the weekend and daily excursions, and housing will be provided for the overnight stays. A modest stipend will also be offered to the interns. This is a wonderful opportunity to fulfill your internship requirements while experiencing another culture and engaging in fun activities.

Open to artists ages 16-25 living in the United States who have a physical , cognitive, mental, or sensory disability .

Previous award recipients are not eligible to apply.

Submissions must be original work completed within the last three years and after the onset of disability.

Eligible media include, but are not limited to paintings and drawings (oil, watercolor, acrylic, pencil, or charcoal); fine art prints; photography; computer-generated prints; digital art; and time-based media (video, film). Work must have a visual component. Two-dimensional artwork should not exceed 60 inches in either direction. Sculpture should not exceed 24 inches in any direction.

Fragile or precious materials that cannot withstand handling, storage, and transportation will not be accepted.
