Opportunity
Second Street Gallery welcomes proposals for exhibitions by/from living artists. Exhibitions are solo, group, or thematic in orientation, and represent artists of both emerging and established reputations
Information
The annual call for entries draws hundreds of applicants from around the world, and usually results in approximately eight-ten artist recommendations, ultimately accounting for an average of 25% of Second Street’s yearly exhibition schedule.
Submissions are judged by an Artist Review Panel consisting of local artists and arts professionals representing the cultural community of the Charlottesville/Albemarle region, including nationally recognized art historians and critics. Review sessions are anonymous: images are projected, artist statements are read, and candidates are scored. Recommendations are made to SSG’s Director who curates the exhibition season, considering both programming needs and budgetary issues.
Second Street Gallery is a non-profit art space. While we do offer works for sale, salability is not a criteria by which submissions are judged. Exhibiting artists often receive a small stipend and, occasionally, a budget for materials.
Requirements
Second Street Gallery will accept proposals from any artist who has not had a solo exhibition at SSG within the preceding four years. Works to be reviewed must have been completed within the last five years. Artists must submit the following for consideration:
1) 10 images, either in slide format in a slide sheet or on a CD, individually labeled with name, title, and orientation. If your proposed work is an installation and/or site-specific, please provide a brief description of how and what you would install and any other pertinent information. SSG makes every effort to return slides & discs, but will not be held responsible for damage or loss.
2) A typed list of images submitted with title, year, medium, and dimensions of each work.
3) A current resume, including address, phone number, exhibitions, etc.
4) A brief artist statement and specific proposal for the installation of your work at Second Street Gallery. Please indicate whether your preference is to exhibit in the Main or Dové Gallery.
5) A SASE (self-addressed, stamped envelope with adequate postage and packaging for return of your information)
6) A $15 check (processing fee) made out to Second Street Gallery
Please do not submit extraneous materials, as the panel will not be able to view them.
