VCU Summer Abroad: Exploring Voice and Movement in Serbia and Greece

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Opportunity

The Departments of Theater and Dance and the Office of International Education are pleased to offer a journey to two destinations in Europe.

Information

During the first two weeks of the trip, students will be living in Belgrade, Serbia while doing intensive study (seven hours a day) of Grotowski/Barba based acting with the world renowned DAH Theatre in their studio. During this time, we will be joined by British voice trainer, Frankie Armstrong, and will explore the Agamemnon/Clytemnestra/Iphigenia story using text from The Greeks. Out of these explorations we will create a devised theatre/movement piece directed by DAH’s Dijana Milosovec which we will then take to Greece to perform in ancient ruins in the Peloponnesis. While in Belgrade, in the evenings we will attend lectures, demonstrations and performances. On our final day in Belgrade we shall take a silent walk through the ruins of Kalemegdan, an ancient Roman/Turkish fortress that overlooks the intersection of the Danube and Sava Rivers. In Belgrade, students will live with families and learn about their culture.

On June 6th we will fly to Athens, Greece where we will immediately begin our tour of Mycenae, Epidaurus, Argos and Delphi, among other locations related to the story of the Trojan War. Where possible, we will perform our devised piece, experimenting with the acoustics of the open air spaces.
