Art Tutor Needed

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Opportunity

The Saving Our Youth program is currently seeking an art tutor.

Information

Saving Our Youth is a non-profit and is comprised of 2 main programs:

The first program is geared towards juvenile offenders. Too often, juvenile offenders continue down the wrong path and end up in jail. We want to decrease the number of juvenile offenders that end up as jail inmates. With the pre-release program they can get the counseling and help they need to change the direction of their lives which include not only counseling but also education, job training, and adult rearing. We also like to include programs that enhance their talents such as Art classes for people interested in art, etc.

Our Higher Education program is geared towards helping promising high school students from under-resourced backgrounds to reach their goals of achieving degrees in law, medicine and politics. The program will supply these students with community engagement, test preparation and academic enrichment so that students not only get to college, but they graduate from college. Community engagement includes mentorship with professionals in the field the student is entering which is where we need your help. What better mental stimulus could there be for someone interested in politics to be mentored by a politician?

These fields were chosen because of the disproportionate number of minorities that enter these fields. Of course, if you are in a prominently minority area, than you’ll see a higher number of minorities in these fields, but country wide that does not hold true.

Is this volunteer or paid?
For now, we are looking for volunteers

How many hours/week does your student want to be helped?
Right now, we just need someone once a week for about 2 hours.

What times/days is he available?
Tuesdays or Fridays after 3PM. Tuesdays preferably.

What is the location that the tutoring would be held? At your facilities?
Normally at our office at 3206 Maryland Ave but it could be elsewhere in the area such as the area library.

Would the tutor need to provide art supplies
We can supply art supplies for our participants but if there’s some items available to help that would be greatly appreciated.

Could you describe the type of drawings that this young artist creates? (portraits, cartoons/animation, abstract, still lives . . . .?)
This I’m not sure of. I’ve seen some abstract art from one of our participants but they probably do other type of art as well
