In the spirit of Eames, Aalto and anyone else with a special thing for engineered wood, Storey Publishing and Philip Schmidt are creating a book of do-it-yourself building projects using plywood (and other sheet goods). Philip Schmidt is the author/editor of the book, who is in charge of finding fresh, innovative and super cool project designs from creative people. The book will contain 101 clever, custom, modern home furnishings and accessories that you can build on a budget using basic hand and power tools. Many are easy to disassemble for storage or to take with you when you move (great for renters and those on the lam). All are made with standard materials available at lumberyards, home centers and online suppliers. The deadline for entering your design ideas is August 12, 2010.

Contributors Receive:

1. Fame: A byline in the published book, with your name under your project’s title. We’ll also include a brief bio of each contributor in the back of the book—a great place to plug your website or business, or maybe just to say something nice about your mom.  
 
2. Money: We’ll pay for each design selected for the book—enough to cover the basic materials for most projects. (Note: Payments are made after the book releases, which is scheduled for sometime in 2011.)
 
3. Your project: We just need a photo of the finished product, so the real thing is yours to keep. In other words, we’ll pay you to design and build something nice for yourself.
 
4. Free book: Each contributor gets a free copy of the finished book (also sent after the book releases).
 

Requirements

 1. Original project design. (Ok to reinterpret traditional forms. Submit as many designs as you like.)
2. Written step-by-step instructions for completing the project.
3. Measured drawing of project parts. (Ok if rough, but must be accurate.)
4. Photograph of finished project.

*Helpfully Notes from the Author: It’s ok to use any hardware, fasteners to complete the project, as long as the materials are readily available and not custom-fabricated or downright pricey. In terms of skill level and equipment, our target readers are regular folks working in their garages. So each project must be doable with ordinary hand tools or portable power tools. We still want to see pieces made with CNC routers and the like; we’ll just have to discuss adapting them for the home woodworker. Unfortunately, we can’t Bend It Like Breuer. Bending plywood is a bit too complex for this book, so please save your bent ply pieces for (I hope) a later edition.

Fellow filmmakers, the 1st Annual Sikh Coalition’s  Diversity Video Competition is accepting applications now. You could have a chance of winning $1,000, a free round trip ticket to New York City (if you live in the U.S.), and 2 passes to the Sikh Art and Film Festival.  Your film will also be premiered at this popular New York film festival in October.

The purpose of the Competition is to provide a space to engage in an artistic dialogue on civil rights issues, stereotypes, and myths surrounding minority groups with a particular anchor in the Sikh experience.  It is through this dialogue that we hope to dissolve ignorance and spread awareness of discriminated minorities.

The Silver Eye Center for Photography is pleased to announce Fellowship 2010, our international photography competition.Our distinguished juror is Deborah Klochko, Executive Director of the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, California.As we enter our 11th Fellowship year, we have expanded our eligibility requirements and the number of major awards.The competition is now open to all international photographers, not just Silver Eye members. Secondly, we are now awarding two Fellowships. The first carries a $3,500 award and is open
to all eligible photographers. The second award, new in 2010, is open only to Pennsylvania residents and carries a $1,500award. Both winning artists’ work will be exhibited at Silver Eye in shows opening in late November 2010.

Requirements

Submissions are limited to ten images from a cohesive, exhibition- ready body of work and must have been completed within the last three years.The submitted images can not have been previously exhibited at the Silver Eye Center for Photography.  The submission deadline is Friday, August 27, 2010 an recipients will be notified by phone after a decision is made. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship Program is a vital source of funding for the visual arts in Virginia. VMFA is committed to supporting professional artists as well as art students who demonstrate exceptional creative ability in their chosen discipline and has awarded more than $4 million in fellowships to Virginians.Undergraduate students have the opportunity to gain a $4000 Fellowship, graduate students can receive a $6000 Fellowship and professional artists can receive an $8000 Fellowship. Mailed applications must be postmarked by Friday, November 12, 2010. Hand-delivered applications must be brought to the main entrance of the Pauley Center on the west side of the museum campus by 4:30 pm, Friday, November 12, 2010. The museum does not accept application materials via fax or other electronic means. Late applications will not be considered.

Applicants will be notified of awards by letter during the first week of February 2011. VMFA does not provide written or verbal explanations regarding the awards. CDs and DVDs of fellowship award recipients will be retained as a permanent record.

Requirements

Undergraduate, graduate students are eligible, as well as, professional artists who are not seeking a degree at the time of the application deadline or during the grant period, August 2011 – May 2012. Also participants must agree to reside in the state of Virginia during the grant period. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States, as well as current legal residents of Virginia or registered in-state students. Professionals must have been residents for at least 24 consecutive months and students for at least 12 consecutive months immediately prior to this application. Applicants must be able to provide verification of residency upon request. Students must be enrolled, or planning to be enrolled, full time for the entire academic year at an accredited college, university, or school of the arts. Partial fellowship awards may be considered on a case-by-case basis for full-time students in the last semester of a degree program.

The Wassaic Project seeks a group of artists working in a diverse range of media who want to produce, explore, challenge, and expand on their current art making practices, while participating in a grass roots, community-based arts organization.  In the final month of the residency, artists will either complete an installation or contribute work to be included in The Wassaic Project Summer Festival 2011.

The Wassaic Project Residency Program has been created to cultivate and support community for emerging and professional contemporary artists. Housed in a historic re-purposed livestock auction barn and nearby house in upstate New York, the Residency Program offers eight artists the opportunity to live and work in the heart of a rural community and offers three local artists studio space.
