Museum Director Intern

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Opportunity

The Williamsburg Art & Historical Center (WAH Center) in Williamsburg Brooklyn is seeking a Museum Director Intern.

Information

Duties:

The Director Intern will administer the historic site, which is a landmark building on the National Register of Historic Places and a NYC landmark. The Director Intern will oversee and direct the initiation and execution of art exhibits and events. He or she will also direct and coordinate the acquisition, storage, and exhibition of collections of the Yuko Nii Foundation, including negotiating and authorizing the purchase, sale, exchange, or loan of collections. They will oversee and help conduct the institution’s research projects, if any, and related educational programs (currently at a minimum). Part of the Director’s duties involve fundraising and promotion, which may include the writing and reviewing of grant proposals, journal articles, and publicity materials, as well as attendance at meetings, conventions, and civic events. The Director Intern will review current programs and make suggestions for improvements of existing policies and programs. All of this is under the guidance of our founder and current artistic director Yuko Nii, and our president and current executive director Terrance Lindall.

Overview:

We have just now ended 13 years of very successful programming and are now looking to develop a permanent staff in the next few years.
The museum Director Intern will have to have a good business sense, although art is very much still at the core of the job description. They will also have a view to what the issues for the arts are today in this 21st century, in order to lead the WAH Center’s further development as a pre-eminent small art center/museum based on size, its collection, innovative exhibition schedule and mission of inclusively.
The WAH Center is one of the region’s true cultural gems, and the next director’s mission will be to find innovative ways to further open the center to the New York community and beyond. With the current economic downturn, there is a pressing need to find solace and perspective, and the art center/museum will play a vital role in building international art community and serving as an international center for free exchange of artistic ideas, thus building international understanding, as stated in the WAH Center’s mission statement.
Located in a world-class city of the arts, New York, and the dynamic international emerging art community of Brooklyn, the WAH Center is in the position to be a catalyst for a broader discourse on the role of creativity across disciplines. A primary task of the new Director Intern is to build strong programs and foster an atmosphere of collaboration. The next director will build on the success and critical acclaim the WAH Center has achieved in recent years, and continue to transform the center into a place for lively presentations and inspiring atmosphere.

Requirements

MA or PhD in Museum Studies or Museum Management.
Prefer someone who already has experience at a major institution, if possible, but that is not a requirement.

Call for Exhibition Reviews - SECAC Review

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Opportunity

The SECAC Review is an annual scholarly journal, the only one of its kind, published in and for the southeastern US. The Review is published and distributed by the Southeastern College Art Conference. The SECAC Review is known for publishing the latest art historical and/or theoretical research of regional scholars as well as reviews of books and exhibitions relevant to the field.

Content: The editors are interested in a wide range of exhibition reviews, from different states, from different types of organizations, and of different art forms, ranging from historical to contemporary works. Neither writers nor organizations have to be members of SECAC to submit a review, although preference will be given to writers and/or exhibitions in the Southeast region served by the Review. Reviewed exhibitions should have been held in the last twelve months.

Information

Objectivity: Writers should maintain critical distance from the exhibitions and artist(s) under review. Reviews cannot be authored by the curator or artists involved in the exhibition. Writers should refrain from reviewing exhibitions to which they have a personal connection.

Style: Exhibition reviews should be written at a level appropriate to the general SECAC membership, i.e., professional colleagues, rather than the general public. This is an opportunity to write at a level of depth and to engage a wider audience for your institution or your research interests.

Requirements

Length: Exhibition reviews can range in length from 1,000 to 2,000 words, that is, from four to eight double-spaced pages.
Images: Authors are responsible for borrowing and submitting images with their essays. Permissions are the responsibility of the author. Please submit at least three images with each exhibition review.

The spacious rooms are illuminated by natural light streaming in from large windows. Creative Boost consists of both private and communal studios, as well as a fully equipped clay and sculpture studio. The private studios will be accessible 24 hours a day during the residency. Creative Boost also has extensive gallery space, giving resident artists the opportunity to exhibit their work.

Project-Based Residencies for Graduate Students

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Opportunity

Ox-Bow will offer 3 three-week residencies to MFA candidates from schools around the nation.

Information

Students may apply as individuals or as pairs to live and work on campus on a project of their design. Applicants will receive one studio space, as well as housing for the duration of their stay (if applying as a pair, applicants will share a studio, as well as housing). Access to classroom studios and studio equipment is not guaranteed. Students should submit proposals to create work that is not dependent on studio access.

Students can apply for one of the following terms:

weeks 2-4: June 14-July 4, 2009
weeks 5-7: July 5-July 25, 2009
weeks 8-10: July 26-August 15, 2009

These three-week residencies are designed for graduate students who may not need the formal instruction provided by Ox-Bow’s traditional class structure. Graduate Residents should be self-directed in both envisioning their projects as well as executing them, though they will have access to critiques with faculty, Visiting Artists, and Ox-Bow’s Resident Academic Director, Phil Hanson. Community interaction plays a large role in life at Ox-Bow, therefore proposals that engage the overall community will be given preference. All residents should be prepared to give a lecture to the general community on their work, as well as on the progress of their project.

Ox-Bow is a learning institution dedicated to experimentation and the artistic process. Applicants should not feel obligated to tailor their projects to fit within Ox-Bow’s traditional course offerings. However, as Ox-Bow has limited technological and equipment resources, applicants should submit a list of equipment needs and plans on how those needs might be addressed.

Requirements

Cost: $500 per 3-week residency for 1 artist; $800 for two artists. Financial Aid is available, and awards will be determined at the time of acceptance.

Proposals are due March 20, 2009. To apply, please send a one-page proposal, 10-15 images of your work, a letter of recommendation, and a current transcript to:
