Call for Entries

  • Opportunity to submit work for a nationally juried show which will take place between January 22 and February 21, 2009
  • The theme of the show is Mythology. This theme is open to the artist’s interpretation: Greek/Roman/Egyptian Mythology, Urban Myths, Comic book Mythology, Myths and Legends, Fairytales, etc… are all acceptable. Artists are encouraged to take a broad interpretation of the theme. The competition is open to all artists 18 or older. Publishers, galleries, agents, and collectors may not submit artwork on behalf of artists. Drawings, paintings, printmaking, photography, digital art, sculpture, ceramics, installations, and mixed media are eligible. Media not accepted: video/film, wearable art (clothing or jewelry). All works submitted must be original in design and concept, and may not be done under supervision. Entries previously shown at the Brickbottom Gallery, or work that is over 3 years old, are ineligible. All work, while on display at the gallery, will be sold through the BAA. Commission for the show will be 70 artist / 30 BAA. 1-3 Prizes will be awarded, by the juror, for best in show. The winner(s) will receive a show in the Brickbottom gallery.   • Application Deadline: November 2, 2008
    Artists must submit a completed entry form, images of 3 to 5 works of art, and an entry fee of $35 US dollars for the first 3 pieces, and $5 for each additional piece. Brickbottom members receive $10 off the entry fee. Entries received without payment will not be reviewed. Acceptable forms of payment include personal checks and money orders made out to the Brickbottom Artists Association.
    35mm slides: (2" x 2"): Slides should be clearly labeled with artist's name, title of work and an indication for top of the work. No glass slides please. For greater chance of selection, please be sure that the slides are of professional quality, without dust or scratches. Slides will be returned after the show if a self-addressed stamped envelope is provided.
    Digital files: All images should be saved at a DPI of 300. We prefer horizontal images to have a width of no less than 800 pixels, and vertical images to have a height of no less than 625 pixels. Otherwise, the images will be too small to provide enough detail for the juror. Save the images with as little compression as possible while maintaining a file size less than 1 MB. Images must be saved in the JPG file format only (with a .jpg or .jpeg extension).

Outdoor glass exhibit in Portsmouth, VA

  • The Courthouse Galleries, housed in the historic 1846 Courthouse building in Olde Towne Portsmouth seeks proposals for outdoor sculptures to display within our garden courtyar
  • The sculptures will be on display within a fenced courtyard from February 6, 2009 – October 11, 2009. The courtyard is open to the public during museum hours and locked after hours. Artist Awards include Juror’s Choice at $1,500, Seawall Award at $1,000 and People’s Choice at $500. Travel stipends are available to participating artists to help defer travel expenses. This year’s juror is Carla Hanzal, Curator of Contemporary Art at The Mint Museums, Charlotte, North Carolina. The exhibition is open to all artists 18 years or older. Artists who are working independently or as a group may enter. Each artist or group may submit up to five existing works that have been completed within the last five years and not already presented at the Courthouse Galleries.     Sculpture Requirements: • For 2009, the Courthouse Galleries is participating in a region wide Art of Glass II. We are therefore, seeking artworks with a glass emphasis, meaning that the sculptures must have glass incorporated into the materials used. • Weatherproof and durable materials with artwork designed to withstand outdoor climate conditions in Hampton Roads. The artist is responsible for installation and sculpture stand or base, if needed on the site determined by the Sculpture Committee. • Dimensions are not to exceed any cubic configuration of 4’ x 4’ x 8’, though the footprint may vary. • Sculptures are offered for sale during the run of the exhibition, and must remain on site until the closing date. Artists are to assign insurance and sale value to each artwork. The Courthouse Galleries will handle all sales of works during the exhibition and are due a commission of 40%, so please include this into your retail value. • Each artist may submit up to 5 sculptures for a nonrefundable handling fee of $25 for professional artists or $20 per full-time student artists. For the fifth entry, simply print a second page and complete information as indicated. • Each sculpture may be presented with up to 2 images representing a different angle or perspective. Each image must include Artist’s Name, Title, Dimensions and Media. If applicable, indicate top of slide. • Submission of a work of art to this exhibition shall be understood to indicate an agreement on the part of the entrant, with all conditions set forth in this prospectus. This includes permission for the Courthouse Galleries to photographically reproduce any of the entries for publicity and educational purposes. • While on display, the Courthouse Galleries will insure each artwork. The artists are responsible for insurance covering transport and installation. • The committee reserves the right to reject any artwork that does not meet the criteria outlined above or that does not match the sculpture proposed. • The Courthouse Galleries are not responsible for storage or insuring artworks beyond the exhibition dates. It is the artist’s responsibility to insure that artworks are removed in a timely fashion.

Design Marathon

  • On Friday October 10th, from 10am-10pm, teams of local professional designers will provide pro-bono design services to ten deserving Charlottesville area non-profit organizations.
  • Creative team will include one student pursuing a design-related degree. Potential projects include branding, brochures, advertisements, schematic building or space renovation drawings, drawings for ADA compliance, or broader site planning.Applications and Work Sample Pages will be accepted from any local/regional designer or student pursuing a design-related degree.
  • The Work Sample Page is as important as the application itself. Please create a single-sided 8.5 x 11 sheet that will act as your portfolio for the selection process. Include as much work as you feel will best describe your abilities to contribute to your project. The page will not be returned. No work submitted on the page will be reused/reprinted without your consent. Applications must be received by September 24th. Late applications will not be accepted. Selected designers will be announced September 26th. You must be able to commit to be at the Design Marathon from 10am-10pm on October 10th.

Call for artists

  • Hidden treasure, a local gourmet seafood and buffet restaurant, will be hosting its first art show on September fifth. We are interested in VCU students and all other artists to exhibit their work. Painting and sculpture are preferred. September fifth is first Friday of September, and we anticipate a large number of visitors, as the restaurant is already well known. Although we already have a sizable number of participating artists, we would love to have more locals and emerging artists to participate as well. It is a great opportunity for anyone wishing to get their name out to the public, and to sell some of their work.
  • The restaurant will be closing its normal service for that evening, however the show dose offer a wine tasting and butler style gourmet small foods. The show begins at five and ends at ten; however that may change to accommodate the entire day. Surrounding galleries have agreed to allow us to market in their facilities in exchange for a switch list (list of other galleries for the visitors at the restaurant to see) placed in the restaurant during the show. We hope that we will have a lot of visitors, and anticipate a busy evening. Upon request, we will allow unsold work to remain on display in the restaurant for an undetermined amount of time after the show.
  • Artist are responsible for the framing of all paper work, however work on canvass can remain unframed. Artists are invited from all genres of sculpture and painting. Please keep in mind that the faculties are not large enough to accommodate large sculptural works, or many over sized paintings. If you have a work you think may pose an issue of size, please contact us with its dimensions, and we will try our best to accommodate it. A small fee for participation will be charged, however no wall space rent, or sale commission will be collected by the restaurant. Artists may present, in the event they are not available to be present for the show, a concept overview and a description of each work so that questions can be answered if they are posed by a patron. Please respond as soon as possible, as the restaurant will be largely striped of tables and decor to make room for the work, and we need to know how many artists will be present to arrange the rooms appropriately. There is no limit on the number of pieces, however unless the works are small, please try to limit your pieces by about 5 to 7. Again, this is a great opportunity for any student or professional artist, and your best work should be in the show. We look forward to hearing from you!

VMFA 2009-2010 Artist Fellowships

  • The Virginia useum of Fine Arts Fellowship Program is a vital source of funding for the visual arts in Virginia. VMFA is committed to supporting professional artists as well as art students who demonstrate exceptional creative ability in their chosen discipline and has awarded more than $3.8 million in fellowships to Virginians.
  • The Fellowship Program was established in 1940 through a generous contribution made by the late John Lee Pratt of Fredericksburg. Offered through the VMFA Education and Outreach Division, fellowships are still largely funded through the Pratt endowment, supplemented by annual gifts from the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation, the J. Warwick McClintic Jr. Scholarship Fund, and the VMFA Foundation’s Annual Giving Fund. Conditions of Awards Awards are made to those applicants of the highest artistic merit and are not based on one award per medium. Please select the discipline that most closely corresponds to the nature of your work. Artists who can clearly demonstrate a history of ongoing collaboration may apply together with one set of documentation, but must fill out separate application forms, noting names of collaborators. Collaborative applications must be delivered or mailed in one package. Collaborating winners will receive one grant award to divide among themselves. Award money will be paid in ten monthly installments, August –May. Applicants may apply for work or study in only one of the disciplines listed below: * Crafts * Drawing * Film/Video * * Mixed Media** * Painting * Photography * Printmaking * Sculpture * Art History (graduate students only) * Film/Video applicants may submit personally conceived works in the following categories only: Narrative (includes fiction, dramatized events and authorized adaptations of literary or dramatic works); Animation (includes the animation of graphics or three-dimensional objects); and Experimental (works that may expand the traditional definition of film or video forms; live-action or animation techniques can be used). **Refers to the combination of two or more media to create one work, including emerging media. (Note: Awards are not offered for architecture, commercial design, or theater arts) Deadline Mailed applications must be postmarked by Friday, November 14, 2008. Hand-delivered applications must be brought to the main entrance of the Pauley Center on the west side of the Museum campus, by 5 pm, Friday, November 14, 2008. CDs and DVDs of fellowship award recipients will be retained as a permanent record. By submitting your work, you authorize that moving and still images may be used for promotional purposes at the discretion of VMFA. This may include and is not limited to display on our Web site, downloadable and print media, artwork, and related text.   • Eligibility (Please read carefully as some criteria have changed) You are eligible to apply if you are an undergraduate or graduate student or a professional artist (not seeking a degree at the time of the application deadline or during the grant period) who agrees to remain in the state during the grant period. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States, as well as current legal residents of Virginia or a registered in-state student. Professionals must have been a resident for at least 24 consecutive months and students 12 months prior to this application. Applicants must be able to provide verification of residency upon request. Students must be enrolled, or planning to be enrolled, full time for the entire academic year at an accredited college, university, or school of the arts. Partial fellowship awards may be considered on a case-by-case basis for full-time students in the last semester of a degree program. In the Film/Video category, only noncommerical, noninstructional works over which the applicant has exclusive control of content and primary creative responsibility will be accepted. No music videos, footage of installations, or other medium will be considered. Note: Recipients of a VMFA Professional Fellowship after September 2004 or full-time VMFA employees are not eligible. No artist may receive more than three Fellowships in any category. A complete application must contain the following materials: 1. Fellowship Application Form (front and back). 2.   • The Chapel Hill Public Arts Office invites artists to apply for the 2008 – 2009 Juried Exhibitions Series. Original two- and three-dimensional work of selected artists will be displayed in Chapel Hill Town Hall and the Chapel Hill Public Library during 2008 and 2009.   • Juried Exhibitions Series Overview Now through September 26, 2008 the Public Arts Office of Chapel Hill is accepting submissions from artists who wish to display original two- and three-dimensional work in Chapel Hill Town Hall and the Chapel Hill Public Library during 2008 and 2009. This exhibition is open to all artists. North Carolina artist are encouraged to apply. There is no application fee. Selected artists will be invited to exhibit their work in small group shows of two or three artists at either the Chapel Hill Public Library or Chapel Hill Town Hall for a two-month period in 2008 or 2009. The Juried Exhibitions Series is promoted in the local media and through Arts Commission announcements. Selected artists will be asked to provide specific information and deliver their work for installation at agreed upon times. Public Arts staff and contractors install the work for exhibition. Opening receptions are usually held Friday evenings or Saturday afternoons. The Town of Chapel Hill will insure works against theft or damage while on display. All artworks are subject to final acceptance by the Public Arts Office at the time of installation. Artworks may be for sale. If the artwork is for sale, the Public Arts Office requires a donation of 15% on any work sold to help defray the cost of this public arts program. At the exhibition’s end artists are responsible for picking up their work at an agreed upon time or arranging for return shipping.
  • How to Apply Artists and teams may send a compact disc containing portfolio materials through the post to the Town of Chapel Hill’s Public Arts Office (address provided below) or in a .zip file sent to chapelhillarts@gmail.com . No hardcopy portfolios will be considered or returned. Each portfolio must include: Ten (10) Images of Relevant Work Each image must be a PC-compatible JPEG file at 72 pixels per inch, as close to but no larger than the following dimensions: 750 pixels wide by 560 pixels tall. Each JPEG file must be named in the following format – lastname_01_title.jpg – where the artist’s last name is followed by underscore, two-digit identification number, underscore, title, file extension. If you wish to show a detail, include it within the required number of images. Please do not present your work as a montage of images (ie., in a PowerPoint file); each image must be a separate JPEG. Images submitted should be representative of the type of work proposed for exhibition. Annotated Image List A word file (.doc) listing JPEG images by two-digit identification number, followed by artist, title of work depicted, media, and dimensions (width by length in inches). Resume A word file (.doc) providing resume, no longer than two pages. Selection Process An Artist Selection Committee comprised of representatives of the Chapel Hill Public Library, Chapel Hill Town Hall, the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission, the Town’s Public Arts Office, and local artists will review all complete portfolios and select artists to participate in the 2008 – 2009 Juried Exhibitions Series. Selections are based on artistic excellence and the goal of exhibiting a variety of media. Call for Artists for the National Capital Art Glass Guild Exhibit at Annmarie Garden

  • August 12, 2008, Solomons, Maryland – Glass artists are invited to apply to The National Capital Art Glass Guild for inclusion in a show titled, Celebrations! , that will take place at Annmarie Garden Sculpture Park & Arts Center in Solomons, Maryland, during the upcoming holiday season (November 2008-February 2009).   • When it turns cold outside, the colorful and spectacular glass creations of Celebrations! will warm the spirit and put every visitor in the mood for the holidays. A variety of hands-on activities, music, and programs will complement the exhibit. An Ornament Show & Sale will coincide with Celebrations! offering opportunities for browsing and shopping, and beginning in mid-December, Annmarie Garden’s annual event Garden In Lights will add to the holiday festivities. Celebrations! is an excellent opportunity for glass artists to join the Guild and exhibit their newest designs. The Guild is comprised of over one hundred artists who work in every aspect of glass. From massive stained-glass installations to bathroom sinks and mouth blown vessels, their creativity knows no bounds. Each artist is unique in their approach to glass so a showing of this group's work is diverse, sometimes surprising, but always exciting. You never know what you will see. The guild was established thirty years ago as the stained glass guild, but some years later the name was changed to art glass guild to include the various disciplines and materials the members were using. Members are primarily from Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia, although a number of members live outside the tri-state area. Membership is open to anyone interested in glass. The Exhibit will be held at Annmarie Garden Sculpture Park & Arts Center, a thirty-acre park that includes a beautiful new Arts Building, walking trails, and a Studio School. The thirty acre park is open daily, 9am – 5pm. The new Arts Building and the Gift Shop are open Tuesday-Sunday, 10am – 5pm; admission to the building is free for members, $3 for adults, $2 for seniors, and $2 for children; children under five are free. A terrific Toddler Zone located in the Arts Building is the perfect place to distract a fidgety toddler, or take the kids for a walk with one of the free scavenger hunts in hand. Call for Artwork - Paperwork

  • Walsh Gallery - Seton Hall University
  • PAPERWORK, to be shown 11/10 - 12/12/08,open to all artists who use paper in their work; preference will be given to those artists who experiment with the medium, so as to introduce visitors to fresh adaptations of a traditional material. By focusing on works of artists that use a traditional artistic medium non-traditionally, the curators seek to create an environment where visitors can debate the connotations of a work on paper. By utilizing the familiarity of paper as a resource, the curators hope to engage visitors in a dialogic experience that will encourage visitors to use a wider spectrum of descriptive terms to discuss the art on display as well as challenge the limited perception of works on paper. The curators are especially interested in artbooks, photography, mail art, stamp art, design, fashion, origami, sculpture, installation, collage and cut-outs. $15/5 entries.

Wearable Art is Back. Deadline 7/30!

  • All garments will be displayed during First Friday (location TBA). Garments will be displayed on models as a “living exhibition.” The show will be judged and the prizes will be as follows: 1st place: $1000 2nd place: $300 3rd place: $200 Fan Favorite: Gift certificate to The Phoenix THEME: “Illumination” All garments must be inspired by light and incorporate the number or value of 30. The event, sponsored by the Phoenix boutique in Carytown, will work in conjunction with 1708 Gallery’s 30th Anniversary celebration and InLight Richmond.
