- Opportunity: Volunteer at the Craft and Design show at the Science Museum of Virginia.
- Information: We need lots of volunteers to make our popular fundraiser, the Craft + Design Show , a success in its 44th appearance. Held Nov. 21-23 in the Science Museum of Virginia's Thalhimer Pavilion, the show brings 73 artists from 19 states, and attracts thousands of visitors. If you can sign up for a shift (or two or three!), you'll get free admission to the show (a $10-12 value) and earn credit toward the cost of a VisArts class . For every three- hour volunteer shift you work, you receive a credit for $10 off a future class.
What volunteers will do:
?x2022; Ticket Seller : take cash and checks, make change, process credit cards, verify membership
?x2022; Program Distributor : Pass out show programs to guests
?x2022; Booth Sitter : help an artist take a break from the booths to stretch their legs, visit the restroom, see the rest of the show
?x2022; Exit Surveyor : collect information from show visitors and offer VisArts class schedules

- Opportunity: Opportunity to participate in the Jack-O-Lantern Art Carve to benefit ART 180.
- Information: On October 29, Baja Bean is hosting a Jack-O-Lantern Art Carve to benefit ART 180. Only a $5 donation to carve a pre-gutted pumpkin from Ashland Berry Farms. Enter your creation in a contest for prizes and giveaways that you won’t want to miss. The 15 winning pumpkins will be filled with goodies and sold to the highest bidder as part of our charity auction. You can even bid on a 12 foot inflatable skeleton from Halloween Express to take home that night! With your skeleton and your prize winning pumpkin, your Halloween will surely be one to remember. All of the festivities will benefit ART 180 which gives young people in challenging circumstances the chance to express themselves and share their stories with others. - Opportunity: Attend Flash Fiction Evening and/or submit work for Poictesme.
- Information: Poictesme, VCU's literary and arts journal, is hosting its 2nd annual Flash Fiction Evening on Tuesday, October 21 st , from 8:30pm to 10:30pm in the Forum Room of the Student Commons. Flash fiction is fiction that is usually between 250 and 1000 words long. Prizes will be given for the best pieces composed during the evening, and all pieces will be considered for publication in Poictesme's 08-09 issue. The meeting will be held in room 300 in Franklin Terrace located at 812 W. Franklin St., Richmond, VA 23284. At this time, you will learn about the degree program, application procedure, timeline, courses, etc. You will also have the opportunity to view the department's facilities, to meet some of the faculty members, and to learn about their research interests. - Opportunity: Opportunity to receive scholarship which will be used towards a study abroad program offered by Amerispan.
- Information: AmeriSpan Study Abroad Programs has generously donated 5 scholarships for VCU students wishing to study abroad on one of their programs! Three scholarships are being awarded for $500 each at Amerispan's College Study Abroad Program (http://www.amerispan.com/study_abroad) and two for $250 each for any Amerispan program (http://www.amerispan.com).
- Requirements: If you are interested in studying abroad on one of AmeriSpan's programs, please let us know immediately ! These scholarships will be given to students who have above a 3.0 GPA and who are applying to an AmeriSpan program. First come, first serve!

- Opportunity: Eight (8) uniquely designed bike racks will be created and installed throughout the Station North Arts & Entertainment District to enhance the area with these sculptural installations, while simultaneously promoting bicycling within the city of Baltimore.
- Information: Station North Arts & Entertainment, Inc. announces the Station North Bike Rack Project.
Design submissions will be reviewed by an independent panel of jurors.
Those invited to be on that panel include: Matthew Bracken, former President of Independent Fabrication; Elizabeth Evitts Dickson, writer for Metropolis and Architect magazines; Irene Hoffman, Executive Director of the Contemporary Museum, Baltimore, Ledelle Moe, Artist and Chair of Sculpture, Maryland Institute College of Art and John Ruppert, Artist and Chairman of the Department of Art at the University of Maryland. They will be joined by Station North Bike Rack Project committee members Doug Bothner and Fred Scharmen of Ziger/Snead Architects, Gary Kachadourian from the Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts, and Monika Graves, board member of Station North Arts & Entertainment, Inc.
The Station North Bike Rack Project is being underwritten by the Baltimore Mayor's Office of Neighborhoods and by the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund.
All submissions will be displayed in an exhibit tentatively scheduled at the Windup Space Bar and Arts Venue (10 West North Avenue) on Friday, November 21, 2008.
Design submissions will be returned, if requested, at artist's expense.
- Requirements: DEADLINE: Friday, November 7, 2008
Design submissions must be on a 30"x30" board and include a visual and written description of the design (material to be used, how it will be secured, and any other pertinent information to aid the panel.) A one paragraph biography of the designer, artist or team should also be included on the back of the submission.
Designers may create a single design, multiple designs, or a series or "family" of designs. Each unique design must be submitted on a separate 30"x30" board.

- Opportunity: Each year, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi awards 50 grants of $1000 each to deserving students nationwide.
- Information: Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Fifty $1,000 grants are awarded each year. To obtain and submit a Study Abroad Application Packet, go to PhiKappaPhi.org and complete the application. Grant recipients will be announced by May 2009.
- Requirements: Who is eligible?
1. The competition is open to all undergraduates in all fields of study.
2. You must be enrolled at an institution that has an active Phi Kappa Phi chapter (VCU has a chapter) and must have a cumulative Grade Point Average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
3. You must have earned at least 30 and no more than 90 semester hours of academic credit as of February 11, 2009.
4. You must provide a letter of acceptance to an accredited study abroad program as part of your application.
5. Your study abroad experience must begin between May 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010 .
6. You must have at least two semesters (or equivalent) remaining in residence at your home institution after completing the study abroad experience.

- Opportunity: The Open Studios Press sponsors 6 juried competitions per year. Winners receive full-color spreads in our nationally distributed periodical, New American Paintings.
- Information: New American Paintings Competitions are conducted annually in each of six regions of the country. Competitions lead to publication in the bimonthly journal, New American Paintings, which, juried by curators from prominent museums, has extended the reach of artists and expanded the resources of collectors since 1993. Our competitions are open to all artists working within the United States. All styles and media are welcome, as long as the work is singular and two-dimensional.
