The university will offer a number of undergraduate student fellowship awards for the summer for projects mentored by VCU faculty. Student award winners will receive a cash stipend of $3,000. The student’s faculty mentor will receive an additional $500 to defray expenses associated with the fellowship project.

All full-time VCU undergraduates receiving a bachelor’s degree in May 2011 or later are eligible to apply.

VCU Summer Study Abroad 2010: New Zeland-Literacy Education, an International Perspective

The Department of Teaching and Learning and the Office of International Education are pleased to offer a unique opportunity for students to study literacy from an international perspective in exciting New Zealand. This program includes cultural excursions, service learning opportunities and attendance at the International Reading Association World Congress in Aukland. Students will enjoy dolphin watching, swimming at the hot water beach, hiking to stunning Cathedral Cove, and playing in the snow on the Whakapapa Ski Field and volcano. Participants will visit a Maori school and a living Maori village where they will experience a traditional hangi lunch. During the conference, participants will meet world renowned experts in the field of literacy education at conference sessions and events.

Elsewhere Collaborative is a living museum and experimental production environment in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina. Elsewhere is set within a three-story former thrift store, boarding house, and warehouse containing one woman’s enormous 58-year collection of American surplus, thrift, and antiques.  Elsewhere residencies invites experimental creators to join our collaborating community in utilizing this immense collection of objects, no longer for sale and now circulating internally, as material or inspiration for site-specific projects that become part of an endlessly transforming environment of objects and works.  Residents live and work within interactive installations that provide evolving frameworks for investigating collaborations, community structures, and creative processes. Our program provides people in the creative field an incredible opportunity to work within a dynamic environment, alongside a vibrant community of experimental artists and producers, with extensive resources and interpretive possibilities available at every turn.  Our internship program offers a one-of-a-kind experience with creative organization building and productions for less advanced creators.

Residency opportunities are for students pursuing advanced degrees, alumni, and faculty. Elsewhere is now accepting applications from artists, curators, writers, musicians, designers, gardeners, makers, builders, scholars, producers, and creatives across media for our 2010 season which runs from mid-March to early November. Long Lake Camp for the Arts is currently hiring staff for their summer camp.

Information

This is an awesome opportunity for anyone who’s interested in working with kids and teaching their trade, plus you get your own studio space. The age range of kids is 10-16 years old. As a teacher you would also be a bunk counselor, which means you would share a bunk with another counselor and thirteen kids, all in one age group. Camp is ten weeks long and you get full room and board, plus a paycheck.

The Say Love Project is looking for both visual and performance submissions.

Information

Say Love is a project that celebrates the triumphs and struggles of the LGBT community. This month-long event and exhibition is about inclusion and we invite artists to showcase their stories and experiences through all forms of visual and performing arts. We encourage art that focuses on social and political topics that are currently affecting the LGBT community. This event is intended to not only express ourselves through art, but to inform all demographics across the board of the passions, struggles and triumphs we face.
-This year’s show is juxtaposing Love and Hate, and how that affects the LGBT community.
-We are looking for stories that deal with topics such as, Prop 8, “Don’t ask Don’t Tell”, Hate Crimes and The Matthew Sheppard Bill.
-We are accepting all forms of visual and performing art submissions.
-Although this is an LGBT-based show we encourage submissions from all sexual orientations.

NSAL Scholarships

Information

One of the greatest opportunities the Virginia/North Carolina Chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters has to assist young artists achieve professional status in Voice and in Art is through our Winston Scholarship Program now in its fifth year.

The $10,000 Shirley Rabb Winston Scholarship in Voice and The $10,000 Naomi Winston Scholarship in Art have been established to allow young artists the opportunity to receive advanced training in either voice or art.

Past recipients of National awards from our chapter have participated in training for operatic roles in Italy and are now in vocal studies at Boston University and at Yale.
One of our 2008 Art applicants received the unprecedented $5,000 National Award to study in New York this past summer and is also a National Portrait Gallery Fnalist. In addition, $1,000 was awarded to applicants in 2008 and 2009. Since its inception,we have always had National Winston winners.

Call for Video Works

The Miami Section of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) at Florida International University (FIU) is pleased to announce a call for works for video and electronics with or without instruments for possible performance at the New Music Miami ISCM Festival Series being held in the spring of 2010.

Information

Requirements

The call is open to all composers and video artists without restrictions. Possible instruments include one or more of the following: Flute picc/alto, Bb Clarinet/Bass Clarinet, Bb Trumpet, Percussion, Violin, Viola, Cello, Contrabass, Classical Guitar, soprano or tenor voice.

Up to 2 works may be submitted with a processing fee of $20 US for the first work and $10 US for the second (foreign currency will not be accepted). Please make checks payable to the FIU SCHOOL OF MUSIC (do not send cash). Note that submissions with missing checks or checks NOT made out to the FIU SCHOOL OF MUSIC will be rejected. Credit card payment is acceptable. Please make sure to include a signed statement authorizing the use of the card for the amount specified, the type of card, card number, and expiration date (incomplete authorizations will be rejected).

In addition to a DVD of the work please include a score if instruments are employed. Please include a bio, program notes, and contact information including name, email address, postal address, and telephone numbers, in word format on a CD. Please note that no materials will be returned so please do not send originals. If you wish confirmation of the receipt of your materials please send a stamped self-addressed postcard to be returned upon the posting of your materials. Since blind judging is employed, please make sure that your name does not appear on the score or recording (please DO include the title of the work on both). Your name may appear on the CD with the bio and notes. These will be handled separately with your check/credit card information. Submissions must be postmarked by November 15, 2009.
