- Opportunity: The Arts and Science Council in Charlotte, North Carolina, on behalf of Mecklenburg County, invites artists/teams living anywhere in the United States to submit qualifications for public art opportunities at the new Hal Marshall facility at Freedom Center, a partially occupied retail mall built in the early 1970s and being converted through adaptive reuse for County services.
- Information: Mecklenburg County is midway through an adaptive reuse project at Freedom Mall, a partially occupied retail
mall built in the early 1970s. With economic revitalization and services growth as primary business goals,
Mecklenburg County wanted the converted facility to invite and attract people, increase occupancy, create
business opportunities and enhance its overall image. Various site opportunities exist for both interior and exterior spaces, including: Exterior gateway or ‘beacon’ sculpture at entryway drive from Ashley Street; Interior centerpiece sculpture or architectural enhancement, Customer Service area; Sculpture or architectural enhancement at or near the LUESA (Land Use and Environmental Services
Administration) entrance;
Various other possibilities including addressing glass, walls, or 3-dimensional space on the interior. Options are open to discussion by the design team depending upon artists’ ability to create innovative, original
works on a significant scale. This facility signifies a major commitment by the County to state-of-the-art
workspace and public facilities, open community access, and environmental consideration in development. The
public artwork will similarly exhibit a contemporary, sophisticated sensibility while creating a unique,
outstanding, and ‘place-making’ identifier for this new services center. Complete prospectus may be found on the Arts and Science Council (ASC) website, at www.artsandscience.org

- Opportunity: Opportunity to experiment with paint lines from Chroma, Inc.
- Information: Chroma, Inc. would like to extend an invitation to your Junior and Senior students to participate in a Trial Program with our professional acrylic line – Interactive, and our oil line – Archival. All that we ask in return is that the students visit Chroma, Inc.’s website ( www.chromaonline.com ) to log onto Paint Talk, our vibrant on-line community forum to post feedback, comments and examples of their artwork created with either of these paints.
We would like to have at the minimum 6 oil painters and 6 acrylic painters, and at the maximum 12 of each from your school.
Listed below you will find descriptions of each paint line:
Interactive Professional Artists’ Acrylics-
Unlike traditional acrylics, all 75 of the "interactive" colors do not suddenly form a skin. This changes the painting process and gives you plenty of time to blend and rework unresolved areas of a painting. The patent-pending formulation allows even touch-dry paint to be reworked or wiped off to blend or reveal layers. Archival quality and lightfast, these intense colors dry to a satin-like finish without a plastic look or feel, and with minimal color shift. Chroma, Inc. will provide the students with 12 color choices, as well as one of each medium in this product line.
Archival Oils-
Archival Oils is the only patented oil paint in the world offering long-term flexibility. This inherent flexibility provides artists unsurpassed painting freedom by allowing them to circumvent classical rules of fat over lean painting. Also, we have chosen our ingredients for performance as well as safety. Our products have low or no odor, and a low possibility for skin irritation. Chroma, Inc. will provide the students with 10 colors, as well as one of each medium in this product line.
- Requirements: Must be junior or senior.
- Contact: Please e-mail Chroma’s Resident Artist, Jen VonStein at jvonstein@chromaonline.com if you need any further information.

- Opportunity: Lexington Art League’s upcoming exhibition, Paintpresent
- Information: In painting, like most contemporary art media, one can find a great variety of techniques being practiced, images being
created, and content being discussed. We can, however, identify specific major currents that resonate with our present
conditions. With this in mind LAL seeks work that addresses any or all of the following phenomena: decoration density,
fantastic figuration, and architectural anomie.
Decoration Density: Contemporary painting practice has redeveloped earlier ideas of abstraction into dense ornamentation
using layered, riotous shapes and colors.
Fantastic Figuration: Contemporary painting practice has reengaged the figure to create a new form that is largely
extraordinary in comparison to everyday experience.
Architectural Anomie: Contemporary painting practice has transformed the grandeur of nature into the introspection of
interior spaces.
Appropriate work for Paintpresent may engage a wide range of media in its investigation of these themes.
Exhibition
The selected works will hang in the LAL’s Loudoun House Gallery from March 14 to April 26, 2009. The Exhibition
Reception will be on March 27, 6-9 p.m.
Absolutely no early removal of artwork is allowed for any reason.
Sales
Not all works need to be for sale, but the Lexington Art League retains a 30% commission on the retail price of all works
sold in the gallery. The artist must determine retail price, which is sent with the application materials.
- Requirements: Entry Fee and Procedure
There is no entry fee for this exhibition. December 19th is the deadline to receive all entries. Please note the LAL cannot be
held responsible for postal delays. Send all entry information to: Paintpresent, Lexington Art League, 209 Castlewood Drive,
Lexington, KY 40505. Review will be by slide or digital images, although we prefer to receive digital images.
To submit an application please send:
Up to 10 digital images
Image list with title, media, dimensions, and date for each work
Resume
Artist statement (optional)
Applications will be reviewed as they are received. Final notification letters will be sent the week of January 19, 2009.
Shipping
Artists are responsible for transportation of works to and from the exhibition, including all costs associated.
Slides and Digital Images
Digital images must be clearly labeled with title and entry number; in other words, save each image using the title and entry
number (for example: #1 Blue Sky, #2 Untitled 1, #3 Untitled 2). All digital images must be submitted as JPEG files on a PC
compatible CD. Save all images at 300 dpi, and no larger than 10” on the longest side. Please do not attempt to send
digital images through e-mail.
Submit one slide for each work. Please remember that the quality of your slides
may influence the selection committee’s decisions.
2D works must be strongly framed, wired on the back for hanging, or otherwise prepared for installation.
If works are framed with glass, Plexiglass is recommended and preferred over glass for all works that are shipped.
Frames of fragile or precious materials that cannot withstand normal handling and storage will not be accepted.

- Opportunity: Hidden treasure, a local gourmet seafood and buffet restaurant, will be hosting its first art show on September fifth. We are interested in VCU students and all other artists to exhibit their work. Painting and sculpture are preferred. September fifth is first Friday of September, and we anticipate a large number of visitors, as the restaurant is already well known. Although we already have a sizable number of participating artists, we would love to have more locals and emerging artists to participate as well. It is a great opportunity for anyone wishing to get their name out to the public, and to sell some of their work.
- Information: The restaurant will be closing its normal service for that evening, however the show dose offer a wine tasting and butler style gourmet small foods. The show begins at five and ends at ten; however that may change to accommodate the entire day. Surrounding galleries have agreed to allow us to market in their facilities in exchange for a switch list (list of other galleries for the visitors at the restaurant to see) placed in the restaurant during the show. We hope that we will have a lot of visitors, and anticipate a busy evening. Upon request, we will allow unsold work to remain on display in the restaurant for an undetermined amount of time after the show.
- Requirements: Artist are responsible for the framing of all paper work, however work on canvass can remain unframed. Artists are invited from all genres of sculpture and painting. Please keep in mind that the faculties are not large enough to accommodate large sculptural works, or many over sized paintings. If you have a work you think may pose an issue of size, please contact us with its dimensions, and we will try our best to accommodate it. A small fee for participation will be charged, however no wall space rent, or sale commission will be collected by the restaurant. Artists may present, in the event they are not available to be present for the show, a concept overview and a description of each work so that questions can be answered if they are posed by a patron. Please respond as soon as possible, as the restaurant will be largely striped of tables and decor to make room for the work, and we need to know how many artists will be present to arrange the rooms appropriately. There is no limit on the number of pieces, however unless the works are small, please try to limit your pieces by about 5 to 7. Again, this is a great opportunity for any student or professional artist, and your best work should be in the show. We look forward to hearing from you!

I envision a bright picture of our planet with flashes of light coming from it in the shape of a cross. But an artist may have a better idea. Reading the 60 page book would be helpful.

- Opportunity: Walsh Gallery - Seton Hall University
- Information: PAPERWORK, to be shown 11/10 - 12/12/08,open to all artists who use
paper in their work; preference will be given to those artists who
experiment with the medium, so as to introduce visitors to fresh
adaptations of a traditional material. By focusing on works of artists
that use a traditional artistic medium non-traditionally, the curators
seek to create an environment where visitors can debate the
connotations of a work on paper. By utilizing the familiarity of paper
as a resource, the curators hope to engage visitors in a dialogic
experience that will encourage visitors to use a wider spectrum of
descriptive terms to discuss the art on display as well as challenge
the limited perception of works on paper.
The curators are especially interested in artbooks, photography, mail
art, stamp art, design, fashion, origami, sculpture, installation,
collage and cut-outs. $15/5 entries.
