  • The Chapel Hill Public Arts Office invites artists to apply for the 2008 – 2009 Juried Exhibitions Series. Original two- and three-dimensional work of selected artists will be displayed in Chapel Hill Town Hall and the Chapel Hill Public Library during 2008 and 2009. ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists creating work that can be hung indoors or displayed in glass cases. DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: September 26, 2008
  • Juried Exhibitions Series Overview Now through September 26, 2008 the Public Arts Office of Chapel Hill is accepting submissions from artists who wish to display original two- and three-dimensional work in Chapel Hill Town Hall and the Chapel Hill Public Library during 2008 and 2009. This exhibition is open to all artists. North Carolina artist are encouraged to apply. There is no application fee. Selected artists will be invited to exhibit their work in small group shows of two or three artists at either the Chapel Hill Public Library or Chapel Hill Town Hall for a two-month period in 2008 or 2009. The Juried Exhibitions Series is promoted in the local media and through Arts Commission announcements. Selected artists will be asked to provide specific information and deliver their work for installation at agreed upon times. Public Arts staff and contractors install the work for exhibition. Opening receptions are usually held Friday evenings or Saturday afternoons. The Town of Chapel Hill will insure works against theft or damage while on display. All artworks are subject to final acceptance by the Public Arts Office at the time of installation. Artworks may be for sale. If the artwork is for sale, the Public Arts Office requires a donation of 15% on any work sold to help defray the cost of this public arts program. At the exhibition’s end artists are responsible for picking up their work at an agreed upon time or arranging for return shipping.
  • How to Apply Artists and teams may send a compact disc containing portfolio materials through the post to the Town of Chapel Hill’s Public Arts Office (address provided below) or in a .zip file sent to chapelhillarts@gmail.com . No hardcopy portfolios will be considered or returned. Each portfolio must include: Ten (10) Images of Relevant Work Each image must be a PC-compatible JPEG file at 72 pixels per inch, as close to but no larger than the following dimensions: 750 pixels wide by 560 pixels tall. Each JPEG file must be named in the following format – lastname_01_title.jpg – where the artist’s last name is followed by underscore, two-digit identification number, underscore, title, file extension. If you wish to show a detail, include it within the required number of images. Please do not present your work as a montage of images (ie., in a PowerPoint file); each image must be a separate JPEG. Images submitted should be representative of the type of work proposed for exhibition. Annotated Image List A word file (.doc) listing JPEG images by two-digit identification number, followed by artist, title of work depicted, media, and dimensions (width by length in inches). Resume A word file (.doc) providing resume, no longer than two pages. Selection Process An Artist Selection Committee comprised of representatives of the Chapel Hill Public Library, Chapel Hill Town Hall, the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission, the Town’s Public Arts Office, and local artists will review all complete portfolios and select artists to participate in the 2008 – 2009 Juried Exhibitions Series. Selections are based on artistic excellence and the goal of exhibiting a variety of media. Public Arts staff will notify artists of the Selection Committee results and will make exhibition arrangements with selected artists. Schedule (subject to change) September 26, 2008: Deadline for Electronic Application Materials October 20, 2008: Artists are contacted with Selection Committee results November 3, 2008: The first exhibits of the 2008 – 2009 Juried Exhibition Series are installed Chapel Hill Public Library Information Artworks displayed as part of the Juried Exhibitions Series are hung in the main entry and lower level public areas of the Chapel Hill Public Library. The Library serves an average of 1,000 people per day and is open seven days a week. The Chapel Hill Public Library is located at 100 Library Drive, Chapel Hill, NC 27516 Chapel Hill Town Hall Information Chapel Hill Town Hall has two floors of wall space and three glass cases for the display of artwork selected for the Juried Exhibitions Series. Approximately 24,000 people visit Town Hall annually. Chapel Hill Town Hall is open Mondays through Fridays and is located at 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Chapel Hill, NC 27514. Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission Information Established in 1992 by a resolution of the Town Council, the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission is the Town advisory board responsible for advising the Council on art-related matters, promoting public awareness of the arts, and working with Town Public Arts staff to provide advice on the Percent For Art program and to increase public access to the arts through programming initiatives. Chapel Hill Information The Town of Chapel Hill is located principally in Orange County, in the north central portion of North Carolina on the Piedmont Plateau, approximately equidistant between Washington, DC, and Atlanta, Georgia. The area’s topography is characterized by rolling hills. The Town, which was incorporated in 1819, presently covers an area of 21.3 square miles and has a population of approximately 53,400. The Town is the home of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the nation's oldest public university.
